The Weirder the Better: Why I Love Commercial Projects

Do you ever hear an idea that's a little ridiculous and immediately think, “Okay... but how could we actually make that?”

Because apparently that's my love language.

Give me the weird project.

The oversized project.

The we're-not-entirely-sure-this-is-possible project.

Those are the commercial projects I love most.

There's something completely different about working with restaurants, designers, architects, builders and businesses. You're not always making a table that needs to fit neatly into someone's dining room.

Sometimes you're creating something that needs to make people stop.

That's where I have the most fun.

I love when a client comes to me with a rough idea, a sketch, a material they've never used before, or even just, “We want something nobody else has.”

Perfect.

Now my brain is going.

Wood? Metal? Epoxy? Texture? Liquid metal? Something completely unexpected?

How do we build it?

How do we make it durable?

And most importantly, how do we make it feel like them?

Commercial spaces have such an opportunity to be memorable, but so many of them end up looking exactly the same.

You've probably experienced it yourself.

Have you ever walked into a restaurant, hotel or business and immediately noticed one thing?

Maybe it was an incredible reception desk. A massive table. A wall treatment. A countertop. Something you actually reached out and touched because you wanted to know what it was.

That's the stuff I want to make.

I don't want Artified to be the company you call because you need another brown table.

I want you to call because you have an idea that's keeping you awake at night and you're not sure who would be crazy enough to figure out how to build it.

Hi. 👋

Commercial work also gives me the chance to pull together everything I've learned over the years, from furniture and interiors to flooring, epoxy, wood, metal and decorative finishes.

Instead of looking at something and saying, “That's not normally done,” my instinct is usually:

“Why not?”

Some ideas work immediately.

Some require samples, experiments, failures, sanding things back down and trying again.

That's part of it.

Because when you finally stand back and look at something that didn't exist anywhere except someone's imagination a few weeks earlier...

That's a pretty great feeling.

So if you're a designer, architect, contractor or business owner with a slightly strange idea, please don't tone it down before you call me.

Make it weirder.

Those are usually my favourites.
